celebrating another year…

Last weekend I celebrated 35 (!) years on this planet, and 14 (!) in this vibrant city, San Francisco, that I’m madly in love with! Thanks to all my dear friends who made my weekend so wonderful!! Click here for my photos, if you didn’t see them already.

Thinking back over all these years, part of me feels like I’ve had so many different lives. We live in different apartments (my current one of 7 years may be the longest I’ve ever lived in a place, in my whole life!), we have different jobs, friend groups, relationships, and habits in our day to day lives. But of course, through it all though, I’ve always been ME, and I feel grateful to be 35 years into this life, and to have learned so much about myself through all of the above. So, to celebrate and acknowledge how amazing my time in San Francisco has been, I thought it’d be fun to put together a post that has a few photos for each monumental year thus far.

A quick pre-SF catch up (it’s quick, I promise):

1993 – Graduated high school in Steamboat, CO, where I was born & raised [photos]
93/94 – Attended art school in Denver, CO for Visual Communications [photos]
94/95 – Dropped out of art school and moved to Boulder, CO. [photos]
95/96 – Lived & worked in Boulder, CO, where I worked for a Chiropractor who I had talked to about my wanting to move to SF, and when he moved his offices back to Beverly Hills, he asked me to move there and help him, so I figured that was my ‘in’ to California! I knew one friend there, Paula – who I’d met in Boulder, along with Sandy – who introduced me to her friend Aletha, who I ended up moving in with in West Hollywood. Everyone asks if I hated LA, but I enjoyed my time there. I was really active & did a lot of hiking in the Malibu hills and Runyon Canyon. :) Anyway… eventually I realized I was looking for FT work again & was like, wait a second… I was on my way to SF! So I packed up my little car with all of my possessions and headed north… moving to SF on my birthday weekend, June 20, 1996.

1996

This was technically when I lived in LA (where I was for 4 short months before moving up to SF), but this was taken probably within a month or so of my moving up to SF; on my birthday weekend, June 20, 1996.

I had met Sandy in Boulder, when she lived in Wisconsin, but once I got to LA, she was living in San Mateo and came down to visit with a few of her girlfriends.

Again, this shot isn’t taken in SF – but it marks the time (it’s hard to find a bunch of digital photos documenting so far back… we didn’t have digital cameras or cell phones yet!). Moving up to SF, Sandy was my one close friend here, so I took her on a family trip to Lake Havasu. How cute is my little sister? (She’s 16 years younger, and just finished her first year of College!)

Drinks with some coworkers from my first job in SF, where I basically answered phones & stuffed envelopes at the Academy of Art. Hey, it was at an art school, so that was close right? :) Sidenote: I can’t remember any of these people’s names, and don’t keep in touch with any of them, which is so rare for me! Anyone recognize any of them?

1997

My boyfriend Dan (who I met through my friend/coworker & his sister, Deanna, at the Academy of Art) & I on a river trip with my employer, The Learning Annex. Getting a job there was a dream come true at the time, even though to start it was also envelope stuffing and phone answering. But the good news is I eventually moved up the ranks to Events Coordinator and had my first salaried position (and my first business cards!).

To save money I got my hair done at Vidal Sassoon by a student, who asked me to be a model in her hair show. heh

1998

Me with the awesome spiritual teacher, Shakti Gawain. I read her books when I lived in Boulder, and after meeting her through my work at The Learning Annex, I volunteered at a weekend workshop of hers, and a few other events. It was probably around this time I also did a lot reading and learning from SARK, too.

1999

On NYE 98/99 I randomly met Matt at the bar. I had been watching movies with a friend’s house around the corner, but by midnight we were bored and decided to go around the corner to a bar & ring in the new year. My hair wasn’t washed & I wasn’t dressed up or anything… funny how that works, huh? I love this photo of us.

There’s a gap in here I can’t find photos to represent as well, but in 1999 I left The Learning Annex & got hired on to my first start-up, working as a Production Artist at Care2.com… my first art job!

2000

Visiting Matt’s family in PA… I love this photo of us, too.

In 2000, I left Care2 and was hired on as a Flash Designer at Spunkytown! Dream job, and back in SOMA (vs commuting down to Palo Alto). But, sadly didn’t last long.

What was left of our team in late 2000.

After taking some time off, I got a job as the lead web designer at Fine Brand Media, in Potrero Hill [view my old portfolio from this time].

Also I think it was some time in 2000 that Matt & I moved into our first place together, which was on the back side of Potrero Hill, near SF General.

2001

2002

I actually got my first digital camera in 2003, and finally started storing some photos online! phew. Except I have a feeling it’s going to make it really hard to just choose one or two photos to represent a year. :p

2003
2003 was a REALLY big year in my life… as you’ll soon read.

Living in Bernal Heights again! Matt & I’s second place together, a cute little place on Lundys Lane. (I had lived in Bernal for maybe 4 or so months (?) when I first moved to SF in ’96.)

Jane & I met online and quickly became close friends. Where before I had been a web designer and blogger on my own, I hadn’t yet met others doing the same thing. Jane introduced me to her community, and honestly I owe SO many incredible relationships & connections to this time.

It was also really key to meet this amazing group of girls & friends, because in May of 2003 – after 4.5 years, 2.5 of living together – Matt & I separated. I moved in to the place I live now, and actually no more than a few months later got laid off my job. 28 years old + Saturn return = Ch-ch-changes!!

Old school crew. This was my birthday weekend, exactly 7 years ago! After my super fun birthday party the night before, this is Ev, Jane, Sarah, Goldman, Chris & me, post hangover breakfast at Boogaloos.

Wow… OK, diving even a little into the last 1/2 of 2003 & 2004 is making me realize I am definitely going to have to do a part two to this puppy!! Well, I got the first SEVEN years covered, eh? :p

Before I complete this chapter, let me just say that pretty much ALL of these friendships are still in tact, and have wonderfully grown, morphed and blossomed into friends whom I consider family. Should you be curious:

Sandy, Paula and Aletha (from 1996) are all still very dear close friends of mine!! Sandy’s back in Wisconsin now (and coming to visit in just a few days!), Paula’s in Vegas (saw her in Feb) & Aletha’s in Oakland (saw her here on my bday!)!
Dan (my boyfriend from 1997) & I are still in contact on Facebook & have been able to see each other a few times over the years (he lives in Santa Rosa with a wife & 2 kids)
Matt (my boyfriend of 4.5 years & who I call my “kittydaddy”) & I are family for life. Matt has a bigger heart than anyone I know (and is always happy to go to Emmy’s Spaghetti shack, or make you blueberry pancakes). I love how close we are after all these years, and feel truly fortunate to have him as a friend for life.
Jane moved away years ago, but now works for WordPress, so we’ve been able to see each other more lately, which has been cool. Sarah moved to Boston & I’m hoping to see her when I go visit in a few weeks! Ev & Goldman are busy rockin’ Twitter, and I’m so incredibly proud of how far they’ve come (but not surprised, because they’re awesome). And CW (Chris) is at Brizzly, along with Shellen, and I’m loving doing illustration work for them!

My friends rule, and I’m excited to recap the last seven years in an upcoming post. But right now I’ve got to get ready for my fabulous new friend, Adrianne – who I met at SXSW this year, and I suspect will be a dear friend for years to come! – who’s coming over for dinner.

Summit of Awesomeness! [Part 2 of 2]

A continuation from my Summit of Awesomeness, Part 1 of 2.
This was originally written in my journal on the plane ride home from Portland, Saturday, June 19th, 2010.

Hey Summit of Awesome peeps!

Did anyone else come back more inspired & feeling more creative than ever? I sure did! It was absolutely awesome to meet so many other creatives – literally to be surrounded every day with other crafty, creative, earth/consumer conscious, business minded people – pretty much a dream come true, right? :)

Sometimes I just wish I could give you all money, just for being awesome. haha. But then I think, how can I do something instead to help promote you – so that not only are you just getting money – and believe you me I wish I had the funds to give you all some anonymous grant to fund all of your fabulous creative minds – but even BETTER is to share your work with my friends and family, so that they can become customers. So you not only make $ off of the sales, but you get a new happy customer, and they get to enjoy your crafty creation – which is what the business side of craft IS ALL ABOUT!

I think about this a lot… the beauty in the business side of crafting and creativity. That flow & exchange. For example, when I was buying from all the awesome vendors (literally, at the Show of Awesome), I was SO delighted to circulate money – flow – to light up & charge (fuel) all those awesome creative engines.

I heard my mind get worried about spending money – and instead was like, are you kidding me? My spending $x on this purchase, I have not only brightened the life of the artist behind the work, but then goes on to touch so. many. other. lives! If I give it as a gift, my friend’s life is brightened up (as am I from the joy of giving), AND all the people that may see that art in the future who get to enjoy it through me or my friend. I mean, listen to all of that love & light! So exciting. And since I returned, many of the items I purchased for myself and for friends have already done this ten-fold. People are inspired by art & creativity! It fuels ideas and gets people talking. And that flow, and exchange of money (aka energy) is such a beautiful way to look at how it all works.

So ya, I really truly loved it all. Getting to exchange ideas & share in our processes; truly supporting each other; helping us remember that we’re not alone; validating our creative processes, that listening and acting on our creative visions is not only rewarding to ourselves, but can be a path towards actually making a living off of what we want to do… which is the ultimate dream, right?! It is for me anyway. :)

I also filled my journal/sketchbook with TONS of new ideas. One of them being a strong call to lead my own workshop.

To back up a little about that, I will preface by saying I’ve been really looking at what comes naturally to me, and what I love doing, and I really *love* speaking and sharing ideas with people. There are so many things to learn in running a business, both personally/psychologically and practically, and I’d love to share all that I’ve learned – aka help save others some of the mistakes I made!

Here’s my on-the-plane initial workshop outline… I’d love to hear what you think!

When “DIY” (Doing It ALL Yourself) isn’t the way to go; collaboration & cultivating a team is the key!
Recognizing what your strengths are, and accepting your weaknesses
- (There’s so much I have to say in this realm! I could write a whole ‘nuther post about it. Ok, adding that to my to-do list now.)
Visualizing having support – who do you need to help you in your business, so you can concentrate on what your passion is (what you’re best at & enjoy doing)?
Visualizing and getting clear on what it would take to grow your business to the next level. What would it look like if it made you $50,000/year? Or—the often highly regarded, and yet sometimes elusive *six figures*—$100,000+/year?
Marketing (might be a day 2)
- Social Media, including Facebook & Twitter (which I always feel like I could do a whole 3 hour workshop on alone!)
- Advertising
- Press
- If this isn’t your strong suit, consider finding an intern or hiring someone to help!
Crafting your Community
Craft shows vs Tradeshows
Time Management
- Getting organized
- Holding yourself accountable w/o negative self talk
- Giving to yourself first, taking care of your Self
- Working in relationship with your Self

What do you think? Who knows if it will ever come to life, but I figured I could see about offering a 1-day, and just see how it goes. Get the feedback & go from there. Thoughts? Please leave a comment below, or contact me directly.

Summit of Awesomeness! [Part 1 of 2]

For those of you keeping up, you’ll know that last week I flew up to Portland, OR, to speak & attend the 2nd Annual Summit of Awesome! It was only my second time to Portland (the first time being probably 10 years ago, and that was a whirlwind weekend trip), so this time around I truly fell head over heals. The city is so lush, and the art & creativity there is oozing… I loved it!

The conference itself was beyond awesome, just as it was last year. Again I was able to reunite with many of my crafty friends from across the country (third year in a row for a lot of us who met at CraftCon in 2008!), and meet some AMAZING new friends. I mean, seriously, how great is it to go to a conference where you’re surrounded by super creative, crafty, talented, earth conscious, super friendly people!? Best.

Plus, I got to see my good friend Justyn, who I know from high school, and his wife, Stephanie, AND my old coworker, Andrea & her two cute kiddos! It was such an amazing trip. Check out all the photos & videos in the slideshow below, or you can also view the photoset on Flickr.

I’m loving my refreshed little home!

I recently did some spring cleaning, complete with getting rid of my TV (!), two large pieces of furniture, repainted my new sewing machine table (watercolor blue), and de-cluttered galore! I still have a number of things I want to do, but overall am absolutely loving how refreshed my home feels. I’ve been reading more, keeping my home cleaner, and feeling lighter and free-er in my space than I have in a long time. Highly recommended!

Thoughts on the BP Oil Spill…

I’m on an incredible email list of passionate locals, and this was sent around, written by a woman named Cindy Cohn, and I just had to pass it on, as it’s a great wake-up-call of perspective on this spill:

“I can’t help but point out that as much oil as is being spilled in the Gulf is spilled *every year* in Nigeria with no real efforts at cleanup or control.

This oil spill is the worst in US history, but it’s not even close to the worst in the world. And we need to be careful that in our understandable upset about this at home we don’t increase the risk to people around the world — that this doesn’t result in increased and dangerous drilling overseas so that Americans just don’t see the devastation so close up.“

She then listed some excellent quotes & referenced articles on this enlightening perspective:

“One report, compiled by WWF UK, the World Conservation Union and representatives from the Nigerian federal government and the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, calculated in 2006 that up to 1.5m tons of oil – 50 times the pollution unleashed in the Exxon Valdez tanker disaster in Alaska – has been spilled in the delta over the past half century. Last year Amnesty calculated that the equivalent of at least 9m barrels of oil was spilled and accused the oil companies of a human rights outrage.”

Interview & Feature on Tom Tom Magazine!

I was so stoked when Leslie Henkel, curator of Tom Tom Magazine’s new feature series, “Crash Crash Craft!” contacted me to do an interview & feature, all about my rock squirrel design!

Crash Crash Craft features spectacular crafts made by and/or for female drummers.
How fantastic is that?! \m/

Leslie’s interview was one of the most entertaining I’ve done, with questions like, “Is Rock Squirrel going to steal my brownies or gank my beer if I let him/her crash at my pad?” Ha!

A few of you probably didn’t even know that my partial* inspiration for rock squirrel was because I used to play the drums, huh? True story! *Partial because the other part can just be blamed on liking small cute creatures.

Speaking again at this year’s Summit of Awesome!

I’m delighted to report I’ve been invited to speak again at this year’s Summit of Awesome!

Last year’s Summit (the first one!) was held in Washington D.C., and I led a talk, with Danielle Maveal of Etsy Success/Virtual Labs, called “What’s a Social Network and How to use it for Good.”

This year’s Summit, however, is coming to the West Coast… wooo! Just over a month away, it will be held in Portland, OR., from June 16-18th, 2010, at McMenamins Kennedy School. I am thrilled I’ll be surrounded by so many talented, like-minded crafters & speakers! Plus it’s just a few days before my birthday… fun!

The details & official descriptions on all of the talks/workshops haven’t been posted yet – however, registration is now open! This year, I am confirmed to speak twice, on the following topics:

Accepting Credit Cards
In this talk, I will share what I have learned through both accepting credit cards online, on my shop, as well as being a beta tester for the raved-about & in-high-demand Square, which is an adapter for mobile phones, enabling anyone to not only accept credit cards on the go, but get a swipe/imprint of the card, too! I’m really excited about this talk, as I’ll be able to bring a few of the devices with me, enabling the crafters present to sign up & get started on the spot! Speaking of Square, it deserves to be noted that *just today* they officially launched, and it’s now open to the public! They released clients for the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Android devices, and are sending out their first batch of free card readers. So exciting… congrats, guys!!

UPDATE: I’ll now be speaking with my awesome friend & fabulous crafter, Caitlin of Rebound Designs! Our official course description, we just submitted today:

Mobile credit card options
Learn the ins and outs of accepting credit cards at craft shows, or anywhere! We will discuss the pros and cons of integrating credit card processing into your bookkeeping process, handling chargebacks, and more. Various mobile credit card processors will be reviewed, including PayPal, ProPay, and the new in-high-demand Square. We will even have few Square devices there, enabling Summit of Awesome crafters to sign up & get started on the spot!

The second talk I’ll be a part of is one that I’ve done a few times before, and I really enjoy:

Using Social Media To Grow, Market and Sell Your Product or Service
Sounds like I’ll be co-leading this with Richard Fox of DIY Lounge, too… awesome! Here’s the summary:
“With all the social media websites and services out there, it can be daunting to pinpoint which ones are the most effective for marketing your products or services. In this call, you’ll learn what it means to develop and engage with your community both online and off, as well as the best practices for each.”

I’m really looking forward to it! I learn so much every time I’m around fellow business owners and crafters/creatives. If you are called to learn more about how you can make a living from your passion or craft, register and join us!

Take time to stop & watch the Chew Lips

I took myself on another little Mission art walk/date today. Somewhat unexpected, in terms of where I ended up going, all I knew when I left the house was that I wanted to get out & take a walk, deposit a check… and maybe pick up up a folding lawn chair, so that I could lay out in the sun, on my deck. :)

I ended up walking up through the Mission, strolling in and out of stores here & there, to about 20th, and then walking back down. I soaked in the art, the people, the sounds of my iPod playing the perfect meandering playlist (which I plan to publish), and the fabulous, healing sunshine. I had set out with my iced soy latte in hand, and a few hours later bought a smoothie, that they were able to put in my same travel container.

I bought a book, and tried on some red boots. And, while I was in the store with all the fabulous red boots, a great song came on their stereo. After it was done, I found myself hoping the next song would be another by the same artist, and when it wasn’t, I asked the sales lady who it was. Chewlips (yes, like Tulips, but Chewlips). I love that I discovered a new band today. I love that in the first few blocks walking, I ran into my friend Leslie, for the 2nd time this week!. I love finding new restaurants on Valencia I can’t wait to try. I love taking the time for me ~ today was mine all mine ~ and meandering through the vibrant streets of my favorite city, that I fall more & more in love with every day.

Looping back down near my house, I made my final stop, and bought myself that lawn chair for my deck. I came home, cracked open a cold beer, slipped on my bikini and settled in with my journal & books to soak up the last hour of the sun.

What a lovely Sunday.

Adding Facebook Like button to my shop & blog

I just added Facebook’s new Like button to both my product pages & blog posts. Pretty cool, I gotta say!

For my shop, since I use Shopify, I was able to find a helpful tip in the Shopify forums & it worked like a charm! Then, to add the like button to my blog posts, which are powered by WordPress, I found this helpful post/code. But there’s also an easy plugin, too (although FYI I haven’t tried that).

~~The cool thing is that you can also post a widget showing the recent activity. So, here’s some of the most recent activity from people liking products in the WilloToons shop:~~

If you could, maybe go like some of your favorite products & blog posts so these don’t look so empty. (haha, as I publish this, the blog one is empty, besides one like from me – hope to see a few more in there soon! :p)

My integrating all of this, this morning, was somewhat inspired by seeing this site Likebutton.me, which Maya (@mbaratz) posted a link to this morning. Thanks, lady! On that site you can even add other sites on the fly to see their recent activity. Man, all this technology… it’s like MAGIC!!

What do you all think of this?
I sort of threw them on (and should really get outside & enjoy the sunshine!!), but – for example – on the product pages, I used to have the “Share This” & “Add to Universal Wishlist” buttons located down below the photo thumbnails on the left. But, after adding the Like button, it seemed too hidden down there. So I mocked it up to have them all be right aligned under the add to cart button (see image below)… but couldn’t get the FB iFrame content to do that. I’m sure it’s doable, but in the interest of actually leaving my house today, I decided to just go with the left aligned.

Here’s a mockup of how I wanted it to look (props to my awesome friend Wes for being on IM with me & giving me feedback. AND ordering his first eat. sleep. rock. repeat. organic t-shirt!!)

I’d love to hear any & all feedback. My one concern is that it might be slowing down my site more. There’s optimization stuff like that I could use help with (I largely do all this myself, and I guarantee it’s not the best way! :p) So I’d love to hear what some of you smarter-than-me peeps think. Both from a visual and code POV.

Lastly, thanks SOO much to those of you who saw my tweets this morning & have already been pushing those like buttons! You’re THE BEST!! <3 <3
