Calling all Creative Entrepreneurs

I am so thrilled to be one of the speakers at the upcoming Conference of Creative Entrepreneurs (CCE), happening August 5th – 7th, and I love that it’s happening right here in San Francisco! This conference completely aligns with my outlook on creative sustainability and keeping your small business balanced with your creative passion.
Willo of WilloToons.com is speaking at the Conference of Creative Entrepreneurs. The lineup is incredible; I’m honored to be among so many amazing minds and talented speakers. I’m currently slated to take part in five (!) talks – UPDATE: I just posted all the descriptions for the sessions I’m contributing to! – but selfishly hope that doesn’t get in my way of learning from some of my favorites in the industry. ;) Some of those friendly faces are:

Jaime Zollars, who is one of my favorite illustrators and we’ve become friends through all of the craft shows we’ve done together over the years (where we’ve also done many product trades, as we’re both total fans of each other’s work!). I’ve known Crafty Superstar, Grace Dobush, since Craft Con 2008, and it’ll be great to see her again, along with Shayna Kulik, who I just met at Altitude Design Summit in January!

Loving that I get to share the bill with the fabulous Jenny HartDiane Gilleland again (we’ve all led talks at Hello Craft’s Summit of Awesome), and soak up some of that incredible Erin Loechner energy… or as Helen Jane calls her, PocketLoechner (because she’s seriously so cheerful, loving & bright you just want to put her in your pocket)!

On top of being thrilled about rubbing elbows with some of my creative pals, including locals, Sherry KellyLisa Congdon, I’m also looking forward to re-meeting powerhouses Joy Deangdeelert ChoMeg Mateo Ilasco, both of whom I think I’ve met in passing but haven’t had a chance to really get to know.

All that said, those are just some of the few friendly faces I know who are speaking. The best part is getting to meet all the incredibly talented and inspirational attendees! Conferences are my favorite for this reason… the opportunity to make friends and exchange information with creative minds from all over the world is pretty much the best thing ever.  Oh, August, hurry up & get here already! :)

What if I were to tell you…

i can hardly wait for you.

What if I were to tell you… that my body has always looked like this, and it always will, plus or minus 10 pounds or so. Would you still want me?

What if I were to tell you… that while I’m mostly a mover & shaker that accomplishes a lot, sometimes I get frozen with fear and don’t do anything for a few days or sometimes even a week. Would you still think I’m amazing?

What if I were to tell you… that I believe connecting with my body is the #1 most important thing that keeps me connected to my creativity, and yet I constantly find myself disconnected from it, escaping or not listening to it, even when it’s screaming at me with sadness and frustration. Would you still think I’m grounded and tuned-in?

What if I were to tell you… that even though I have done a few things with my art & illustration, I often feel like I completely suck, am a fraud and feel like I should stop wasting my time thinking I have anything to offer in the world with my art, let alone that it will ever make me any money. Would you still think I’m creative and fearless?

What if I were to tell you… that while connecting with people, meeting new friends and connecting current friends with others, is one of my true passions, there are times when I don’t want to see anyone at all. I let down friends and cancel on plans I’ve made, and I hermit up inside my home with my kitty for days. Would you still think I’m such an outgoing social butterfly?

What if I were to tell you… that it’s scary for me to admit my fears. That I feel ashamed of my own insecurity, and sometimes I’m simply not good at loving and accepting myself for who I am. Would you still think I’m so confident?

What if I were to tell you… I am learning more and more every day about how to love and accept myself just the way I am, right here and right now. To be compassionate with myself and others.

What if I were to tell you… that I’m afraid you will see that I am flawed. That I’m not as great as I might seem. That I’m not perfect. And I’m afraid once you see the cracks, you won’t love me anymore and you’ll leave.

What if I were to tell you… I’ve prepared my whole life for that possibility. Which is why I’ve strived to become an independent woman. To not need you. To be self-sufficient. Self-reliant. My own judgment of my self has caused me to put up boundaries and walls with others to keep myself safe.

What if I were to tell you… I wish I didn’t put up those walls. I wish I did have you in my life. I want to meet you and have you stay strong through my keeping you at arm’s length. That you will love me for who I am, and be compassionate with me as I journey forward on my path. That you’d make me feel safe, and remind me that I can shine or make mistakes, and that both are OK.

What if I were to tell you… that as I get happier in my life, it makes even more space for you. And that I know my life will be a little bit sweeter with you as a partner by my side. Growing and learning and shining our lights together. I can hardly wait.

Shop for Japan on Saturday, March 26th: A Global Community Event To Benefit Japan

Today, March 26th, I will be joining merchants around the world to donate a percentage of my revenue from the WilloToons Shop to non-profit organizations providing support to the people in Japan.

Shop For Japan
“Shop For Japan” is harnessing the power of business and the ubiquitous tools of social media to catalyze a global outpouring of support to benefit Japan’s recovery from the devastating earthquake and tsunami.

The concept is simple: Participating businesses pledge to donate a percentage of their revenues from March 26th to one of Shop for Japan’s recommended charities. These disaster relief charities are rigorously vetted and will all be participating in relief and reconstruction efforts in Japan.

Consumers can access a directory and map of participating businesses at ShopforJapan.com, where they can find more information about businesses near them, the percentage of their donation, and the charity that business is supporting. Watch the Shop for Japan video for more.

:::

WilloToons is donating 40% of all sales today to Doctors Without Borders.

Participate with your own shop, or go out and show some local love to support those who are committing to helping the cause!

I’m back from Austin!

Happy as can be! (from Monday night with Jay! <3)

Haaaaaay! I’m back from Austin – aka the most amazing 10 days ever!

Every year I go for the full SXSW conference – Interactive & Music – and it’s seriously like Spring Break for Geeks. I’m surrounded by hundreds of my bestest friends having the time of our lives, meeting new people and seeing all of our favorite bands play. It doesn’t get better than that!!

All that said, I’ve been in a serious SXSW vortex, which means my inbox is completely overflowing, I have hundreds of videos & photos to sort through & post and I’ve got some serious unpacking and kitty-snuggling to do. Which has already commenced, of course:

Snugglefest! <3

Look at me posting two glasses photos. They’re new! You like ’em? I actually didn’t wear them most of the time in Austin, I wore my contacts. Weird that I’m even needing anything again at all after 7+ years of not needing anything post-Lasik! Sort of sad, but whatever. It was worth all those years of 20/20 vision & I don’t even need to wear them now, it just helps me see things far away a bit more crystal clear. Anywhooooo…

I’m back! I have some exciting new projects that will finally get my full attention again. I will answer your emails, I will find your business card you handed me, we will connect on The Facebook and The Twitters, and life will move forward… back here, home in San Francisco!

More soon.

This year is going to be EPIC. Not only because I’m so excited to see all my awesome friends from all over the globe and meet new ones, but leveling it up like no other year before is that 100+ of my friends & I will be staying in the SF Embassy again. This is year two, and it’s going to be bigger & better than ever!

represent Over the course of the 10+ days (yes, I’m staying through Music, too), we’ve got 150 people staying in the Embassy, two brunches and another party/show in a bar we rented out. We have bands lined up, DJs, a photobooth, ridiculously awesome shwag (seriously, wait till you see it) & more. Woop! Note: These events aren’t open to the public… it’s just a perk of being a part of the Embassy.

My friend Amy, one of my fellow Ambassadors, was interviewed on SXSW’s site recently and summed it up best, “I really believe the next big thing in the music tech space will be traced back to the SF Embassy.” Truth. We have a lot of amazing minds in those 150 people – friends who work at companies like Sonicliving, Twitter, Flickr, Apple, Google, Foodspotting, TicketFly and many more (like WilloToons! :) – and the connections and friendships last a lifetime. I already know as a fact from meeting one of my best girlfriends there last year!

Here’s an article written up about us from last year: SFAppeal: SF Embassy Does SXSW 2010

Alright, hope you can all make it to my talk and the maker meetup… especially if we haven’t met yet, find me & say hello!

Are you speaking this year, or putting on an event I should know about? Please leave a comment & let us know.

See you in Austin, buddies. <3

Celebrating small wins from the last three years

Ferry Building
Listing out your accomplishments is an excellent exercise, if for nothing else to remind you that you can do whatever you put your mind to. So, in celebration of the last 3 years, I’ve made a list below of some of the more notable awesome things that happened:

  • Space Gallery’s ‘Graphic Content’ Show, 2007
  • Loving You Gallery Show, 2008 and 2010
  • Amazing Press, including: Josh Spear, Cool Mom Picks, Poppytalk, Eco-Fabulous, Geek Sugar, Mighty Goods, Urban Baby, Oh My That’s Awesome and being interviewed for SFist, T-Shirt Magazine, Amex Open Forum, Inflection Points, Drummer Girl Mag and more. See Press page.
  • Selling my line in some of my favorite local boutiques: Still Life, RAG, Perch, Modern Mouse
  • Having my friend Tim Ferris wear a rock squirrel tee in his Wired.com interview. Check it out
  • Having my friend Laura Albert (aka JT Leroy) wear her ‘i’m just a little bit famous’ tee in a Rolling Stone interview (Nov/Dec 2007) and it getting a mention in the article.
  • Taking my experience & knowledge and having the opportunity to speak at SXSW, Summit of Awesome, Fashion Business, Inc. and many more.
  • Selling my line to customers all over the world…. 10 different countries & counting! This includes how awesome it was to travel to over 7 different cities around the country and sell at super fun indie shows, like Renegade, Unique LA, Blogworld and more.
  • Having hundreds of WilloToons fans from all over the world send me amazing testimonials and photos of them happy in my tees, kiddo gear and jewelry.
  • Obtaining a grant and a free year of office space and coaching as a part of the Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center’s Incubator program. See summary post.
  • Illustrating a custom, limited-edition t-shirt for Microsoft’s Expression 3/Silverlight 3 Launch Event in San Francisco.
  • Illustrating the adorable Phineas Brizzly Bear, and seeing Brizzly sell to AOL.
  • Founding and/or being an integral part in several amazing creative collaborations.

Not bad! I’m probably even forgetting a few major things.

The gift is the journey
Personally, I love how much I’ve learned over the last three years. I’ve truly grown personally and professionally in immeasurable ways. Moreover, one of the greatest gifts of all has been connecting with thousands of people around the world.

It makes me happy knowing that I’ve touched lives in some way. That by my following my heart, and creating something, it had a ripple effect out into the world. Now that’s something to write home about.

:::

Acknowledge accomplishments
Stop and take a minute to write down 10 things that you’ve accomplished in the last year, or the last few years. They don’t all have to be professional/career oriented either, they can be varied. Maybe it’s something you didn’t even plan to do, or didn’t think you could do, but ended up succeeding. See what comes to mind. It’s a powerful exercise in helping erase self-doubt, and reminding yourself: you are awesome!

Emotional Intelligence

愛心 HeartPhoto © nodie26 on Flickr

I am emotionally intelligent. Sure, I know a little bit about a lot of other things, but I feel most grateful for my emotional awareness. It’s this intelligence, in particular, that enables me to navigate the relationships with my self, and others, through this lifetime.

We are here to learn and grow
Many say ‘enlightenment’ is the goal, and whether you resonate with that or not, you have probably figured out by now that we will consistently be faced with challenges and opportunities for growth in our lives. The one, supremely important, constant in that equation? Our relationship to our selves and our bodies.

To thine own self be true
Getting to know yourself – truly and without (or as little) self-deception as possible – is the #1 greatest give you can give to the world. On the outset that may sound selfish, and can often entrap some in a spiral of self-absorbtion, but getting to know yourself and your body really well is the healthiest and most ‘enlightened’ goal, if you ask me.

Knowing yourself helps you:

  • set boundaries: with others, with yourself. Bosses, parents, lovers, children, pets, friends, strangers. It’s important!
  • discover your true gifts/passions/desires/skills.
  • be humble.

Humility
There’s a humbling self-acceptance in getting to know yourself and peeling back all the layers to get to the very bottom. In fact I think ACCEPTANCE is possible, and is the ultimate goal. Which goes hand-in-hand with an even more heart-centered word: Compassion. *sigh* If only the world could be slipped some compassion in their Wheaties, huh? Let’s not get stronger to fight harder, let’s get stronger within ourselves and our hearts to not let ego and illusion fog our perception of what’s really going on. Yes, indeed, this world needs more love and compassion… as much as each & every one of us can muster. And it all starts with ourselves.

The more you get to know yourself, the more you realize two things:

  • You are unique.
  • You are just like everybody else.

Like I said, it’s humbling!

This is the thing, being unique isn’t about #1 at the top of a mountain or being this one person in a crowd that stands alone. Nope. It’s about recognizing that without ego or disillusion, that your presence in the short 5-100 year blip you are in existence physically on this plane, is an opportunity to add to the collective. Collective love, intelligence, innovation, awareness, happiness, joy, discovery and evolution.

Somatic Awareness
One of the biggest gifts I have discovered in getting to know myself, is how incredibly KEY it is for me to stay connected to my body. After years of disconnecting or abandoning my body, and recognizing how that effected every other part of my life, I’m now much more aware of the signs. I am getting better at noticing and making time and space to reconnect. My connection with my body is absolutely essential for me in sustaining the flow of creativity.

As I’ve mentioned before, in January I started an amazing yoga practice in my home: Marianne Elliott’s 30 Days of Yoga. Doing this practice a few times a week really transformed me. I’ve done a lot of different exercise in my life, but having this ritual – and even on the days I didn’t do it, simply having the intention – to make time to connect with my body every day was really life changing. Simply starting with intention, you can really transform the relationship with your self and your body, and over time, watch it  grow and blossom in ways you’d never have expected.

“A good intention is one that is deeply grounded in your current situation and state – founded in what you need rather than any abstract ideas about what you ‘should’ be doing. It’s about starting from where you are.” – Marianne Elliott

Love yourself. Accept yourself. Give yourself the time and space to connect to what makes you happy. Namaste.

At the Speed of Life: A cheat sheet on what’s up with WilloToons

Helen Janes awesome scheduleHelen Jane’s awesome chalked-up February calendar. <3

Life has been moving very fast lately. Not necessarily in terms of time-flying-by – because, if anything, I’ve been trying to slow time down – but in terms of big monumental life/career changes? YES.

In January, I made two major announcements:

  1. I transitioned into an advisor role with Storenvy, the startup I joined on with last summer (maybe you missed that announcement, too?). Which, in essence, means I’m not working my butt off full-time at a startup anymore… and I’m diving back into my own business(es) – wahooo! More on this below.
  2. I announced I’m letting go of my apparel line. It’d been a long-time coming, I just hadn’t gotten around to it yet… but really exciting to finally make the declaration. I had a few huge clearance sales and most everything has sold out, or close to it! There’s still a little bit left at the time I’m writing this though, so if you missed it, go see what you can nab before it’s all gone.

I have had a lot of changes happen really fast within about 7 months – let alone the last 30 days – so it’s no wonder it’s been hard for my friends to keep up!

New Directions
For those who have been following closely, you’ll know that I have been making some awesome shifts personally. I have written long posts about my interests and priorities moving forward, but I haven’t quite come out & told the world what I’ve been working on, business-wise. I’m almost there though, as it’s been percolating and coming together over the last month more than ever!

This tweet
, from just a few weeks ago, hints to one of the new projects I’ve got brewing and sums it up perfectly: Super excited and nervous… but mostly excited!

T-minus OMG
So I’ve been planning on launching all of these over the next few weeks, but I’ll be honest with you… right now it feels a little bit impossible. I have SO much to do! But the good news is, it’s not impossible; nothing is. It’s all about putting one foot in front of the other and, most importantly, remembering that it doesn’t have to be perfect. Especially considering I’m launching all of this with no budget and simply my own ideas, intention and a few gracious and skilled collaborators. I’m excited for it to be rolled out in all of it’s quite-possibly messy and not-perfect glory!

Life and business are always a work in progress – a constant evolution, if you will – and we simply can’t sweat the small stuff. In fact, I feel it’s our greatest challenge to stay present in the journey and enjoy it for what it is, while we’re in it. I’m really enjoying starting at the beginning. It’s so easy to want to race to the end and see where it goes, see it polished and smooth. But for me, right now, I couldn’t be more excited about learning… and possibly failing… and then learning some more. Anything can happen!

Stay ‘Tooned
Alright, so now that I’ve caught you up on the last 30 days of big news, promise to stick with me over the next fast-paced 30? Hope so.

Subscribe to my newsletter and/or subscribe to my blog via RSS (you can even receive updates via email) to be sure you don’t miss a beat. I will have a few big announcements coming through in the next week or so.

Going to SXSW?
I look forward to catching up with a lot of you in Austin! I’m doing a talk on Saturday and hosting a Craft Makers Meetup on Tuesday, during Interactive and am staying through Music, too. See you there!

UPDATE: Here are all the details (and a fun video) all about my SXSW talk – hope to see you there!

Creative Collaboration: Don’t DIY Alone

For those that don’t know, D.I.Y. = Do It (all by) Yourself. What fun is that? :)

A big thanks to all who came out to my workshop today – Creative Collaboration: Don’t DIY Alone – at Noise Pop’s Culture Club! As promised, here’s a list of all the inspiring collaborations, both local and around the world, some tips on how to start your own creative collaboration, as well as some of the useful tools that were mentioned.

WilloToons: A Creative Collaboration

I consider almost everything I do a collaboration these days, including my custom illustration work, but my love for the process really took hold when I launched my product line, WilloToons, in 2007. While at times it certainly felt like it was just me, it never has been, and I couldn’t have done it without the amazing skills and support of so many. So from the very first day I launched I had a whole page dedicated to giving credit to those who helped me get there.

Now, as I let go of my apparel line, and move into the next exciting phase of my business, I am fortunate to have several talented co-creators in the mix. As I hinted… it’s all in the works now and I can’t wait to show you. Sign up on my mailing list and/or join the WilloToons Facebook page to be notified when it launches!

Some of the other collaborations/collectives I’ve had the pleasure co-creating:

  • Church of Craft – A local open-to-the-public craft day that happens monthly in cities around the world! Sign up on the mailing list to be notified of the next one near you & let’s get our craft on together! I’m also looking for a new SF location that can host us (~10-15 people, one Sunday/mo from 12-5pm) – please comment here or contact me directly if you have an idea. You can also like the Facebook page.
  • Ladies Independent Design League (LIDL) – We’re a collective of artists, crafters, illustrators, writers & photographers who meet weekly in San Francisco. We share tips, support and most importantly make space for recognizing our accomplishments while keeping us accountable on our goals. I’ll be developing our website a little more in the coming months.
  • Nice to Meat You – A simple Tumblr created in celebration; a collaboration with a few former-vegetarian friends of mine. Funnily enough, I’m mostly veggie these days, but still, there’s some great imagery out there. Including my Bacon Lover greeting card, co-created with my friend Ali, who thought of the punny copy-line!
  • Barack ‘n Roll – In 2008, me and a few girlfriends came together & decided to put on a rock show to raise money to send volunteers out to swing states. Within a short 2 months we put on a rockin’ show at the Independent and raised $10,000. YES WE DID.
  • Notable mentions:
    • Bay Area Alt Summiters – I recently created a Facebook group to reunite those of us in the Bay Area who attended the Altitude Design Summit in January and want to stay in touch.
    • Comfort Food Club (CFC) – a group of women that regularly came together to cook whole, healthy food while catching-up and supporting each other in our lives. Many amazing connections came of those dinners!
    • Bamboozled – where I mentor a group of teen writers & artists in the Sunset, who publish their writing online.
    • Get Crafty – another site of mine, spawned through the core-conversations I co-led with my friend Rebecca at SXSW in 2009/10.

Local (SF/Bay Area) Collaboratives to Get Involved With

  • Church of Craft – see details above & sign up to craft it up with us in SF or Oakland!
  • Lightbox SF – local support system for artists with happy hours, workshops & more.
    • 200 Yards – Micro-neighborhood Photography Exhibit.
  • Craft Bar at MOCFA – Every first Thursday, the Museum of Craft and Folk Art hosts Craft Bar with Etsy Labs.
  • Check Meetup.com for fun events near you.
  • You and your friends. Start something! :)

Inspiring Creative Collaborations Happening All Over the World

Start Your Own Creative Collaboration!

Collaborations come in all shapes and sizes. They can be with one other person, 10 other people, or with strangers all over the city or world. In essence, collaboration is the process of creating something bigger and more amazing than what you could have ever created on your own.

Checking out the wiki entry on Collaboration, I loved seeing that the roots of this word go back to Trade, when communities had to collaborate on growing their crops and sharing food to live. There’s a beautiful message in this; that is to recognize a creative collaboration is one that feeds all of the parties involved. There’s a magic that happens when two or more people come together to create something new.

What do you like to do?

Is there an idea you’ve had lingering for awhile, but you’re not sure how to get it off the ground? Who could you brainstorm with for how to get started? What would it look like fully hatched? What might be the smallest, tiniest first step?

One of the first things to ask yourself is what do you like to do, or what would you like to do more of. Everyone has different interests and, as I said in my talk today, one of the most important things you can do for yourself is to know your strengths and own your weaknesses. You might be an idea person, but not so great at execution… so find someone who makes it happen! There are some who love research, and others who love developing an idea in the best way. Build your team with this in mind.

If your idea isn’t project-oriented, that’s OK, too! Maybe you just feel your life would benefit from having a collective around similar goals, or a support group that meets regularly? There is strength in numbers.

One foot in front of the other

The next step is to find someone (or several people) to collaborate with… but where do you start?

  • Throw your idea out there!
Bring it up at parties, or on Twitter or Facebook. See who it resonates with it. Start thinking of what questions you can ask, and what questions other people ask you. See what happens when you start placing a focus and intention on your new idea. (Hint: people come out of the woodwork)
  • Invite a friend for coffee/tea and talk about it.
  • Invite 5 friends for coffee/tea and talk about it.
  • Post an ad on Craigslist.
  • Post in forums centered around the topic you’re interested in.
  • Go to meetups near you with like-minded individuals.
  • Create a meetup, inviting like-minded individuals.
  • Create a blog & invite people to collaborate.
  • Important: Don’t listen to your inner critic. Keep going. ;)
  • Trust the process. Experiment. Play. You never know where it’s going to go.

Helpful Tools for Collaborating

  • Google Groups
  • Facebook Groups
  • Evernote – One of my absolute FAVORITE tools these days to collect notes, thoughts, quotes and more. Syncs to mobile devices, and you can share notebooks, too, for collaboration.
  • Dropbox – 2GB is free! And you get more space when you refer people (hech hemm, so use my link, please ;)
  • Start a blog: WordPressTumblr or Posterous – invite others to post things with you
  • Google Docs – word docs, spreadsheets and more.
  • Tom’s Planner – totally forgot to mention this today. I love this tool! Gives you a great bird’s eye view into a production schedule on a project.
  • Skype
  • Email/IM, or you could go one step up & use Campfire

Thanks again to all the friends, old and new, who came out to see my talk and participate in the conversation. So fun! I really hope that I see a few of you at an upcoming Church of Craft day, or at one of my next upcoming talks: Sat, March 12th at SXSW in Austin and then again, back here in SF, at the Conference for Creative Entrepreneurs in August.

Want to watch the full hour of my talk? It’s a pretty DIY video (my fault for not making sure my friend Ron brought his nicer camera :p) but it works for those who wished they could have been there:

Fill in the gaps… who or what’s missing from the lists above?
What Creative Collaborations are you doing and/or are on your radar? I know we’ve only scratched the surface with the above, and I’m missing a bajillion great ones, so let’s hear it. Leave a comment below to add your thoughts!
