Dry November

I’ve embarked on a self-imposed Dry November.

Inspired by having lunch with a dear friend who knows she needs to get sober (quit drinking & smoking pot), I heard her listing out how her life would look once she did. She’d have more time in her day, be more focused, feel healthier and better, make more money.

It was hard to see my friend, who I’ve known for 16 years and love so much, be struggling with this again (she was sober for the first 10 years I knew her), and I could tell that making this change was feeling really challenging and almost impossible; even though she knew how much it would improve her life.

She’s so wise, powerful, talented and amazing… among the many incredibly phenominal artists who have also struggled with addiction. Is it too hard to hold all that light?

To process through our meeting, I sat down and wrote through all that came up for me during our lunch. I considered the challenge for myself and what it would mean for me to decide to be sober.

First, I immediately felt grateful that I don’t have an addiction to alcohol. However it’s also not to say it was a super easy decision either, considering I really enjoy my lifestyle as it is! Deal is, the social circles in San Francisco revolve largely around cocktail parties, great wine, gourmet food and artisan bars, and I’m a very social person who enjoys partaking in all a city has to offer in that regard.

Plus, while I have full faith she will be able to quit when she puts her mind to it, I totally understand how our identity and our community is so intrinsically tied to these behaviors and activities. It’s how we have historically had fun and made friends! Met new loves, made great memories! No doubt it’s a tough thing to shift.

Second, while I know it’d be healthy, I’ve always considered moderation and balance a little more sensible than extremes. I know extremes well, and they can be just as damaging, depending on how you go about them (mentally, emotionally, physically).

However, as I wrote through it, examining my own fears and reviewing the benefits – more time, more focus, feel healthier, make more money – I was like, ‘I want those things, too!’ So I have decided to have a Dry November.

This is honestly probably the first time I’ve done this ever. Maybe I did it a few years back? I can’t remember. Mind you, I’m the girl who (after partying a lot in high school) stopped drinking when she turned 21.  I started again around 23, but I feel like recently – between traveling, parties, dates, etc. – drinking has been even more prevalent. This will be a nice break for my liver. :)

So there it is. I’m not drinking for the month of November. Mostly to turn things on their head; try something different. Ambitiously I’m using this time to get super focused on creating the next phase of my business and continue writing up a storm. That part is really exciting and so far so good!

I actually wasn’t feeling well the first week, due to a mini cold (so really I haven’t had a drop since Oct 28th or something), but it’s been easy so far. I’ve been sleeping amazing. My skin has cleared up a bit. Life feels more manageable… slowed down to a sweet pace. I feel like I’m in a cozy cocoon. It’s good. A little boring at times, and lots of tea… but good. :) I’ll keep you posted as the month goes on.

What habit could you use to create or give up in your life… even for 30 days?

This is Day 3 in my week of posting about forming new habits as a commitment to Creative Sustainability & self-care. Stay ‘Tooned for more tomorrow!

Only Floss the Teeth you Want to Keep

We all know we should be flossing, but how many of us actually do it?

Or maybe we go to the dentist, and we’re really good for a few months, but then we fall off the wagon and stop doing it. I don’t know about you, but that was me for a long time. Brushing was a regular morning and night event, but the flossing habit would come and go.

Recently, my friend Rose totally *changed my flossing life* by introducing me to the Reach Flosser. Seriously, this changed. my. life. I love this thing!

I had tried those mini flosser thingies,  and after trying one again recently, I realized why those suck: the floss in there is way too thick! The Reach flosser has really nice thin floss that makes it easy to quickly go in & get the gunk out. Even if it’s quick, it’s made it 100x easier to get it done every day, and sometimes twice a day!

It comes with refillable snap-on heads, but thanks to Rose I also learned you don’t have to use a different one each time. You can totally rinse off the Reach flosser & re-use the same head for a week (or whenever you feel it’s ready to be changed).

I know this might seem like an ad for them, but I promise you I’m not getting paid for this. It’s seriously a game changer!

Habits & Discipline
All this has led me to thinking a lot about habits and discipline. Or even better stated, the ways we commit to take care of ourselves in our lives. Moreover, how many other habits have I been trying to pick up, but just didn’t have the right tools, guidance or support?

There’s an App for That
A few months ago I discovered SuperBetter (again thanks to my BFF Rose, who is their rockstar Data-Driven COO!), and it was exactly what I was looking for.

With SuperBetter, I have created ‘Power Ups’ for the ways I take care of myself in my life, and it’s a nice little reminder every day to see how I’m doing. Flossing is one of them, along with things like Hiking with a Friend, Meditating, Doing the Dishes, Eating Whole Fresh Foods, and more.

I highly recommend creating your own custom Power Ups for the things that make you feel alive and happy in your life. Then you can use your own motivational text, add a photo that speaks to you and – as a part of the ‘game’ – you can set them to strengthen you Emotionally, Physically, Socially or Mentally. Here’s a screenshot of mine from today:

UPDATE 3/21: I’ve been using the Lift App more recently, as they’re integrating their social connection features more rapidly. I definitely miss some of the SuperBetter features, but at the end of the day, I just want a place that reminds me of the things I’ve committed to, in order to take care of myself in the best way I know how.

Write, Write, Write

This month I’m doing NaNoWriMo, which is a worldwide event that propels over 230,000 people to attempt 50,000 words in the month of November. Usually in the form of a novel, hence the name – National Novel Writing Month – but it takes many forms: screenplays, non-fiction, etc.

I’ve taken this challenge on simply as a measure to write, write, write. I have been taking Wild Writing with Laurie Wagner at Teahouse in the East Bay, and it’s been nothing short of transformational. Writing is so cathartic! So not only is this a commitment to my Morning Pages (ala Wild Writing), but I have a number of projects that I’m working on that not only need brainstorming out through writing, but then will need copy written, emails and newsletters written and more. But the biggie is my finishing my book proposal; a task that has sneakily managed to hide in the back of my mind and at the bottom of my to-do lists for the past few months.

Start Where You Are

Writing has become a really powerful outlet for me in the last year, and now I find when I’m in a tough situation, or simply need some reflection, it’s the first place I go. To write it out. Get it out. Let it be seen and processed on the page.

Writing wakes something up within us. The small whispers that often go unheard, the anger, the sadness, the confusion… the inspiration, the creativity, the mad hatter ideas; all of these get a chance to come out and have a say. Most incredibly is the inner wisdom that we all have within us has a chance to speak back to you and talk it through. Invite this part of you to write with you, and see what shows up.

Two of my favorite tools to clear the space for writing:

Catharsis & Creation
I’m actually taking this month to make a number of changes in my life. I’ll post more on each of those throughout the week.

What habit could you use to create or give up in your life… even for 30 days?

I’m speaking at re:build 2012

When the fine folks at re:build contacted me about speaking, I wasn’t quite sure what to think at first. Given that it’s a conference all about building the web, I wasn’t sure they were aware that — while I did web design & development for 15 years — I’m not exactly doing that type of work anymore. Fortunately, they’d already done their due diligence, and are more than familiar with my focus on Creative Sustainability for designers and creatives. Now we’re talking!

So, it is my great pleasure to announce that in October, I’ll be joining esteemed web nerds from around the world to speak, mingle and talk all things web (and taking care of yourself while you’re kicking butt building it), at the re:build Conference 2012, in Indianapolis, IN.

It’s key that we occasionally step back and look at the full picture. Whether you’re feeling disconnected and stressed out, or on top of the world and ready to level it up, we’ll explore a few simple ways you can lifehack your way to a thriving work/life integration.

Tickets are really affordable, and if this year is anything like last year (which I’m sure it will be, and then some), it’s going to be an incredible line-up. Hope to see you there!

UPDATE: It was awesome! Here’s a recap of some tweets & photos from my talk –

A lot can happen in 9 short months

Women are awe-inspiring
As a childless woman (besides my handsome baby kitty that is), I’m constantly in awe of how miraculous it is that women are capable of growing and birthing another human being in 9 short months. Phenomenal, to say the least.

I’m not pregnant, nor planning to be any time soon, but as a creative business owner, I resonate quite deeply with the process: a seed is planted, there is a gestation period, and a new idea is born into the world.

Exactly nine months and four days ago, my dear friend Mati and I started talking about collaborating on a project together. She first emailed me (on a day that turned out to be a major turning point in her life), and our first meeting was over a delicious brunch at Boogaloos. We had two other brainstorming sessions over the next few months, but it had to be put on hold, as come mid-April, I was knee deep rockin’ it at Stitch – leading webinars and speaking at conferences around the country – and Mati was busy with her Get Your Paint On ecourse and preparing for the launch of her first book, A Daring Adventure in Paint. Busy ladies!

RE:CONNECT is born
Fast forward to now, where last week I announced my bold decision to dive back into my heart’s calling, and Mati and I have finally had the opportunity to put the finishing touches on our brainchild: a 5-week ecourse, called RE:CONNECT – Get Unstuck & Find Your Magic!

RE:CONNECT - Get Unstuck & Find Your Magic

Yup, that’s right… the band is back together. The WilloToons Connect band, that is!

All three of the remarkable women I had inspiring conversations with last summer will be contributing their magic to this course. Mati being my co-creator, and incredible contributions by my two other guests, and dear friends, Marianne Elliott and Helen Jane Hearn. Additionally, we have incredible contributions by the veritable Jen Louden, Rachel W. Cole, Laurie Wagner, Flora Bowley, Molly Graves, and more!

Meet the Contributors

Click here to learn more about the course, and more behind how it came to be from my perspective, as well as Mati’s story, too.

Here’s to 9 months in the works, and giving birth to me & Mati’s first major collaboration together! We hope you’ll join us, and our amazing guest contributors, for this 5-week course, supporting you on your path to reconnect, get unstuck and find your magic.

What an amazing year it’s been

Hello, my friends! I have some big news for you today. But before I get into it, let’s talk about how amazing this year has been.

I first met (and fell in love with) the team at Stitch last year, got on board, and immediately got to work. It wasn’t long before we had launched Stitch out of beta, quadrupling signups and connecting with hundreds of makers and creative small business owners around the world.

We took Stitch to SxSW last spring, where I organized and produced a conference-within-a-conference and got to see many of you in person at CraftMakerCamp SxSW. We even won Best in Show at TechCocktail’s StartUp Life event! It’s been a joy to see my mentors and friends become valued investors and advisors to a product I believe in so whole-heartedly.

This experience has been one of the most exciting and rewarding in my life. Connecting with fellow artists and bolstering Stitch’s brand presence through meaningful, authentic relationships has reaffirmed my passion for supporting entrepreneurs on a deeper level. Therefore it’s with a gigantic heap of gratitude that I share with you that the time has come for me to dive back in and fully embrace my work as a Creative Business Coach. I will continue to give Stitch my enthusiasm, but I know that, at this point in their evolution, the company will benefit from a more quantitative marketing approach moving forward.

There’s nothing like being able to throw oneself into an early-stage product, and have a hand in actively shaping their future. In fact, one of my greatest joys has been bringing on my rockstar colleague and friend Camille, who is like a bolt-of-lightning for this team. With my leave, I am confident and delighted to pass the torch to her, and can’t wait to watch her continue to knock it out of the park. (Go get ’em, girl!)

So what’s next for me?
I will be sharing more about what’s coming up next very soon, but please know this move is a great thing for everyone involved. I’m thrilled for what’s ahead, and I can’t wait to give you all the details.

I adore helping creative entrepreneurs, makers, movers & shakers, and there are many of you in this community I’m grateful to call true friends. Thank you, as ever, for your support in everything I’ve taken on over the years.

Meet me back here Monday, and we’ll get started on what’s next! As promised, one of my first endeavors has launched! Click here to read all about it »

Reinvent the Way You Make a Living, Do What You Love, and Create a New Future

The $100 Startup by Chris Guillebeau

Chris has been inspiring me ever since I discovered his website, and his book, The Art of Non-Conformity: Set Your Own Rules, Live the Life You Want, and Change the World.

At the time I discovered him, I’d been an artist, entrepreneur, and self-employed for a decade. So, while I was well-versed in the liberation of living my life the way I wanted, Chris amplified my passion with a practical toolkit for taking it to the next level.

His latest book, The $100 Startup, just hit the shelves, and now it finds me on the founding team of an incredible startup, where I not only get to do what I love, but I’m in the business of improving other people’s lives… which is pretty much the best feeling ever.

I’m fascinated with the intersection of passion and work, and this book dives deep. Once again, adding fuel to the fire within me, and providing a practical toolkit for getting out of your own way, going out there and making your dreams happen — all while changing the world.

Kudos, Chris. You are changing the world, and I’m honored to know you!

Speaking at True University

Our {Stitch Labs} fabulous investors put on a cool thing every year called True University, and I’m incredibly honored to have been asked to present! Look at all these ridiculously talented folks who will be droppin’ their knowledge:

My talk is entitled, Invite Your Customers to the Party – Building and nourishing your community through social channels.

Part of me can’t imagine what I could have to share with all of these super smart founders, entrepreneurs and innovators, but hopefully they’ll learn a few things! :)

I’ll know a solid handful of folks there already – so that’s fun, but I also know I’m going to come away with so many new friends. Not to mention an incredible amount of insight and knowledge! Can’t wait.
